3.0T Athletic Pubalgia Protocol

Goal:

In the young athlete we hope to provide exquisite anatomic detail of this hard to image region of anatomy.

Scanner:

These exams should be performed on the 3T magnet both for resolution and speed.

Pre-scan:

please have the patient use the restroom to empty their bladder. Make sure to obtain quality localizers (especially the sagittal) as there are three different oblique planes used for the small FOV images.

Scan Planes and FOV

Standard axial and coronal large FOV images of the entire pelvis.

Axial Oblique:
Using the sagittal localizer images, the axial oblique images are obtained using a line parallel to the iliopectineal line. Remember to obtain the images through the pubic symphysis using a 20cm FOV.
iliopectineal line

The Red line is the iliopectineal line. This is the angle for the axial obliques.

labelediliopectinalline

Obtain the images centered at the pubic symphysis. The white line below shows the correct coverage area. Please make sure to get a few CM above and a few CM below the symphysis.

Sagittal and Coronal Oblique:

These are small 20cm field of view images of the pubic symphysis with a slight oblique angle that is parallel to the anterior margin of the symphysis. Please have the symphysis at the center of the images and obtain equal amount of area above and below. We need this view to evaluate both the superior margin and the inferior margin of the symphysis. Example planning image below. Best planned off the sagittal localizer.

Sagittal image of the midline pubic symphysis.

sag symph

Image shows the approximate FOV to cover for both sagittal and coronal oblique images. The ket to getting these images is matching the angle of the pubic symphysis. Sagittal and coronal images are then obtained using the small 20cm FOV.

Coronal Oblique FOV and Angle

corfov

Axial image showing the approximate FOV - REMEMBER - both the sagittal and coronal oblique images need to be angled to match the angle of the pubic symphysis as shown above.
